The film also tracks the theaters’ eventual decline\, through to current-day preservation efforts. All guests are responsible for their own bar and food tabs.  \n  \nAbout the film: \nIn this beloved musical\, Mimi Glossop (Ginger Rogers) journeys to England to seek a divorce from her absentee husband. When Mimi meets dashing performer Guy Holden (Fred Astaire)\, sparks fly\, and\, most importantly\, lavish song-and-dance numbers ensue. While romance and comedy factor into the film\, the production is largely a showcase for the legendary talents of Rogers and Astaire\, most notably displayed in an extended sequence during the third act. \n \n  \nWhen: Sunday\, November 16th \nTime: Door 6:30pm; Screening 7:00pm. Join members of the Art Deco Society for an evening of cocktails and connection at the former Professional Building (now\, the Downtown Phoenix Hilton Garden Inn) lobby bar\, Monroe’s!  \nThis is a no-host gathering for members and those interested in Art Deco\, where we will gather and enjoy the ambiance of one of Phoenix’s most extravagant Art Deco lobbies. No reservation required\, just show up! Vintage or vintage attire is encouraged\, but not required. All guests are responsible for their own bar tabs. We look forward to seeing you there.  \nAbout the Professional Building: \nThe Professional Building was completed in 1932 by the architectural firm of Morgan\, Walls\, & Clements\, originally constructed as the “National Valley Bank” building. The bank resided on the ground floor\, and other floors of the high-rise were reserved for medical offices. It’s impossible not to notice the original brass elevators and marble floors that invite you to the large open-air lobby. This interior was vacant for two decades until it was renovated and restored to its former glory\, featuring stunning Art Deco pillars and zig-zag motifs replicated in the original color scheme.  \nSince 2013\, Hilton Garden Inn takes over the entire building with a modest bar\, Monroe’s\, on the ground floor with lounge and cocktail seating. Monroe’s offers a full-service bar menu and a place for guests to relax and unwind. DESCRIPTION:The Art Deco Society is proud to partner with Savage Rhythm’s Jonathan Lindsey to present Dancing in the Jazz Era: a multi-media presentation with live demonstration that will take you through the history of dance in the Jazz Age. \nThe Art Deco movement influenced several art forms in the Jazz Age\, including dance. This presentation will dive into the history of dance from the 1910s-1940s when jazz music evolved with a wide variety of dancing styles that include vernacular jazz\, swing\, ballroom\, Latin\, blues\, and more. Learn about how the influences of black culture\, socioeconomics\, and the art of movement made dancing in the Jazz Age so unique. \nWe are looking forward to bringing to you this presentation that covers more than just the swing dancing you may be familiar with\, but a discussion about the mix of dances that created one of the most exciting and vibrant eras of movement. \nThis presentation will include live demonstrations with professional dancers so you can experience the feelings and movements of each style of dance and see how they developed with each other and with the music of the time period. \nDon’t miss this unique event. \nDATE: March 8\, 2025 \nTIME: 12:00pm-1:00pm Q&A to follow \nLOCATION: Phoenix Masonic Temple – Red Room 345 W. He is founder of the performance group Savage Rhythm. As an instructor and DJ\, Jonathan has traveled throughout North America and Europe spreading the gospel of classic jazz dance\, music and history. He has performed in New York City\, Pittsburgh\, Las Vegas\, Los Angeles\, and throughout the southwest. Jonathan’s passion for dance lies in roots vernacular jazz and swing styles. \nThrough his experience as a student of the sciences of anatomy and kinesiology\, Jonathan brings the unique perspective and knowledge of body mechanics and movement to teaching and the dance. Jonathan’s obsession with jazz and swing started at the very young age of 8 years old through surprise exposure to Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. The awe and wonder at the music and movement of jazz greats continued until meeting friend\, mentor\, and original swing dancer Frankie Manning and childhood dreams of jazz dancing became a reality. He has since gone on to study\, work\, and collaborate with many classic and contemporary masters.

Martin Auto Museum has over 170 vehicles\, including classic cars\, hot rods\, customs\, imports\, and much more. It also has one of the largest collections of auto memorabilia\, antique gas pumps\, and signage anywhere! Whether you are a car expert or know nothing about them\, this event is for you. \nFor Society members\, an expert guide with Martin Auto Museum has hand-picked several deco cars to highlight the evolution of the automobile and their design in the Art Deco era – relating it to other mediums of decorative arts in the 1920s and 1930s. Art Deco elements in these automobiles can be found in architecture\, fashion\, industrial design\, and more. Learn about these marvels of engineering and art! \nUnlike other museums\, you can even step into these cars to see what it would have been like in the driver’s seat (and take some great photos)! After the tour\, you are encouraged to walk around the rest of the museum to experience cars from every era. Museum volunteers and guides can answer any question you may have on the collection. Each of these special cars has a story to tell. \nMartin Auto Museum is generously giving our Society a group discount – only $10 per ticket ($15 for non-members)! By the 1920s\, women were not only voting and bobbing their hair but becoming Olympic champions and stars of the sports pages. SUMMARY:Pandora's Box at the Orpheum
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a live performance by Mysterium Quartet as part of the Orpheum’s Silents film series. This modern musical experience will be an interesting addition to the classic and (at the time) scandalous 1929 German film. This film is a great example of the early Art Deco era of film in both its design and content. \nSensationally modern\, the film Pandora’s Box follows the downward spiral of the fiery\, brash\, yet innocent showgirl Lulu (Lousie Brooks)\, whose sexual vivacity has a devastating effect on everyone she comes in contact with. Daring and stylish\, Pandora’s Box is one of silent cinema’s great masterworks and a testament to Brooks’s dazzling individuality. \n  \nWhen: April 21\, 2024 \nMeet time: 2:00pm in front of the theatre \nShow Time: 2:30pm \nWhere: Orpheum Theatre \n  \nThis is a casual meet-up for our members interested in silent film. The Art Deco Society will meet outside of the Orpheum Theatre at 2:00pm (30minutes before show time) so you can get your ticket from Erin. Please give yourself extra time to park and get through security to enter the Orpheum. We encourage our members to dress up in the spirit of 1920s movie-goers and pay respect to such a grand theatre! We’ll see you there! \n  \nTickets are usually $23 + $5.70 in fees through the Orpheum \nOur members are getting a discounted rate of $18. We are passing on this discount to our members. We only have 10 tickets available\, so it’s first come\, first served. There’s no wrong way to spend your time at the Biltmore\, except for not joining the Phoenix Art Deco Society at our historic walking tour… \n  \nYou are invited to join the Phoenix Art Deco Society for a private tour of the Arizona Biltmore\, A Waldorf Astoria Resort. This 90-minute walking tour will guide you through the history and stories of the hotel with a Biltmore historian.  \nStick around after the tour for photo-ops\, sip on a drink or two at the Wright Bar\, where it’s said the Tequila Sunrise made its debut\, and mingle with other members. \nTours at the Biltmore are usually $50/person – the Phoenix Art Deco Society is able to offer our community this tour at a great discount! The ticket price for this event includes the 90-minute Phoenix Art Deco Society tour of the Biltmore Hotel. We have reserved a section at the Wright Bar to mingle after the tour. Note that guests will be expected to pay their own tabs at the bar. \n  \nAll tour guests will meet us in the lobby of the hotel. After the tour\, we will have time to take photos in the lobby. Join us for bubbles and dancing at Heritage Square’s pop-up speakeasy\, Prohibition Hideaway. The event will run from 6:30 pm -9 pm and tickets will include admission to our speakeasy\, a glass of bubbles\, and a bottle of wine and charcuterie spread to share with your sweetheart.
