DESCRIPTION:The Art Deco Society is proud to partner with Savage Rhythm’s Jonathan Lindsey to present Dancing in the Jazz Era: a multi-media presentation with live demonstration that will take you through the history of dance in the Jazz Age. \nThe Art Deco movement influenced several art forms in the Jazz Age\, including dance. This presentation will dive into the history of dance from the 1910s-1940s when jazz music evolved with a wide variety of dancing styles that include vernacular jazz\, swing\, ballroom\, Latin\, blues\, and more. Learn about how the influences of black culture\, socioeconomics\, and the art of movement made dancing in the Jazz Age so unique. \nWe are looking forward to bringing to you this presentation that covers more than just the swing dancing you may be familiar with\, but a discussion about the mix of dances that created one of the most exciting and vibrant eras of movement. \nThis presentation will include live demonstrations with professional dancers so you can experience the feelings and movements of each style of dance and see how they developed with each other and with the music of the time period. \nDon’t miss this unique event. \nDATE: March 8\, 2025 \nTIME: 12:00pm-1:00pm Q&A to follow \nLOCATION: Phoenix Masonic Temple – Red Room 345 W. He is founder of the performance group Savage Rhythm. As an instructor and DJ\, Jonathan has traveled throughout North America and Europe spreading the gospel of classic jazz dance\, music and history. He has performed in New York City\, Pittsburgh\, Las Vegas\, Los Angeles\, and throughout the southwest. Jonathan’s passion for dance lies in roots vernacular jazz and swing styles. \nThrough his experience as a student of the sciences of anatomy and kinesiology\, Jonathan brings the unique perspective and knowledge of body mechanics and movement to teaching and the dance. Jonathan’s obsession with jazz and swing started at the very young age of 8 years old through surprise exposure to Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. The awe and wonder at the music and movement of jazz greats continued until meeting friend\, mentor\, and original swing dancer Frankie Manning and childhood dreams of jazz dancing became a reality. He has since gone on to study\, work\, and collaborate with many classic and contemporary masters.

We are excited to be a part of such a prestigious event that contributes funds to the Make A Wish Foundation. \nCar enthusiasts are invited to join the public for this one-of-a-kind car show that features cars of all eras\, refreshments\, and even a vintage fashion completion. All guests must purchase their own tickets and can arrive at any time during the event to check out the car show.  \n \n  \nWhat is the Concours?\nA curated and judged exhibition of the world’s finest collector cars\, the Arizona Concours d’Elegance is a celebration of automotive design\, supporting the arts and local artists. \nThe event is presented in partnership with Scottsdale Arts\, the nationally recognized arts organization responsible for public art projects for the city of Scottsdale. \nThe Concours invites more than 100 select rare and exotic automobiles to be considered for judging and exhibition\, with the best among them earning class awards and the coveted Best-of-Show. \nMore than 150 volunteers support this event as well as judges from the United States\, Canada\, and Europe. The event has welcomed spectacular cars from some of the finest collections across the United States as well as Europe\, South America and Canada.

Martin Auto Museum has over 170 vehicles\, including classic cars\, hot rods\, customs\, imports\, and much more. It also has one of the largest collections of auto memorabilia\, antique gas pumps\, and signage anywhere! Whether you are a car expert or know nothing about them\, this event is for you. \nFor Society members\, an expert guide with Martin Auto Museum has hand-picked several deco cars to highlight the evolution of the automobile and their design in the Art Deco era – relating it to other mediums of decorative arts in the 1920s and 1930s. Art Deco elements in these automobiles can be found in architecture\, fashion\, industrial design\, and more. Learn about these marvels of engineering and art! \nUnlike other museums\, you can even step into these cars to see what it would have been like in the driver’s seat (and take some great photos)! After the tour\, you are encouraged to walk around the rest of the museum to experience cars from every era. Museum volunteers and guides can answer any question you may have on the collection. Each of these special cars has a story to tell. \nMartin Auto Museum is generously giving our Society a group discount – only $10 per ticket ($15 for non-members)! Your tickets will get you entry into the museum\, access to our curated Art Deco Society tour\, and access to the entire museum for as long as you wish. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE history presentation and book talk with the author of Swimming Pretty: The Untold Story of Women in Water.\n\nJoin author Vicki Valosik as she discusses her new book\, Swimming Pretty: The Untold History of Women in Water—a groundbreaking history of how women found power in water\, written “with the precision and grace of an Esther Williams tableau” (Los Angeles Times). \nValosik’s illustrated talk will offer an engaging history of women’s empowerment through the water\, with a focus on the Art Deco era. \nIn the Victorian era\, few American women could swim\, but that all changed in the early 20th when they began throwing off their soggy petticoats and diving into the deep end. By the 1920s\, women were not only voting and bobbing their hair but becoming Olympic champions and stars of the sports pages. This transformation was made possible by female swimmers of the stage\, who used their athletic skills to entertain\, as well as to educate and inspire. Swimming Pretty—which Publisher’s Weekly described as “an incisive marriage of sports and cultural history”—traces a century of aquatic performance\, from vaudeville to the Olympic arena\, and brings to life the colorful cast of characters whose “pretty swimming” not only laid the groundwork for the sport of synchronized swimming but forever changed women’s relationships with water. \nFar more than bathing beauties\, these swimming starlets ushered in sensible swimwear and influenced lifesaving and physical education programs\, helping to drop national drowning rates and paving the way for new generations of female athletes. \nYou are welcome to purchase the book at Changing Hands! Ostriches. \nTake a journey through 1920s Arizona\, one sip at a time\, during this luxurious cocktail-tasting experience hosted by The Ostrich Bar in Chandler\, Arizona\, which sits right underneath the historic San Marco’s Hotel. Chandler has a unique history\, and it all started with founder Dr. AJ Chandler bringing his veterinary practice and ostrich ranch to Chandler’s desert landscape. As the city grew\, Dr. AJ Chandler chose to store his Ostrich feathers in the large basement of the newly built San Marcos Hotel. And if we know anything about basements during the Jazz Age\, we know that they are the perfect location for a speakeasy. This modern musical experience will be an interesting addition to the classic and (at the time) scandalous 1929 German film. This film is a great example of the early Art Deco era of film in both its design and content. \nSensationally modern\, the film Pandora’s Box follows the downward spiral of the fiery\, brash\, yet innocent showgirl Lulu (Lousie Brooks)\, whose sexual vivacity has a devastating effect on everyone she comes in contact with. Daring and stylish\, Pandora’s Box is one of silent cinema’s great masterworks and a testament to Brooks’s dazzling individuality. \n  \nWhen: April 21\, 2024 \nMeet time: 2:00pm in front of the theatre \nShow Time: 2:30pm \nWhere: Orpheum Theatre \n  \nThis is a casual meet-up for our members interested in silent film. Put on your glad rags and discover the Architectural style that swooned the world in the 1920’s and smuggled itself into the young Phoenix cityscape amongst Italian Renaissance Revival\, Spanish Colonial\, Classic Revival and other fascinating architectural styles. \nMarvel at the historic architecture of the 20s and 30s hidden in plain sight on this walking tour\, and join us for lunch afterward.\nWe encourage you to dress the part as we embark on our 1.5-hour journey (walking shoes are recommended).  \nLunch will follow\, but it is not included in the ticket price.
