If you’re not a member\, sign up today! \nVenue TBD. \nAbout The Glass Key:  \nThe Glass Key is a classic noir mystery written during the early Great Depression (1930-31) by Dashiell Hammett who forgoes the civic corruption of his previous book\, Red Harvest\, to explore the moral nuances of friendship\, loyalty\, and betrayal.  \nNed Beaumont is a gambler and a professional troubleshooter for his friend Paul Madvig\, a cheerfully corrupt political power broker who aspires to greater things. Madvig has his eyes set on none other than the daughter of Senator Ralph Bancroft Henry\, the heiress to a dynasty of political purebreds. When the senator’s son turns up dead\, Madvig becomes the prime suspect. Join the Phoenix Art Deco Society for an Art Deco walking tour of Downtown Phoenix! \nDiscover the architectural style that swooned the world in the 1920’s and smuggled itself into the young Phoenix cityscape amongst Italian Renaissance Revival\, Spanish Colonial\, Classic Revival and other fascinating architectural styles. \nMarvel at the historic architecture of the 20s and 30s hidden in plain sight on this walking tour.\nWe encourage you to dress the part as we embark on our 1.5-hour journey (walking shoes are recommended).  \nTour Highlights​: \n\nLearn the basics of Art Deco and its influence\nEnjoy the exquisite architecture of the Luhr’s Tower\, Professional Building\, the Maricopa County Courthouse\, and other architectural gems in the downtown area.\nWe will try our best to step into a couple of open public lobbies from the 1920s and 1930s\nLearn more about the culture of the 1920s and 1930s in Phoenix and around the world!  ​\nThe tour will wrap around in a circle so we’ll end where we started. SUMMARY:Orpheum Theatre Tour
DESCRIPTION:By popular demand\, we have scheduled a private tour for the Art Deco Society of the historic Orpheum Theatre. Located in Downtown Phoenix\, the Orpheum Theatre is a fully restored 1929 atmospheric theatre\, featuring a magnificent disappearing Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. This tour will provide access to both public and behind-the-scenes areas\, offering a rare glimpse into the magic of a historic movie palace. \n  \nA Brief History \nOpening on January 5\, 1929\, it was the pride of Phoenix\, a town of 48\,000. It had 1\,800 seats and an early form of air conditioning\, which made it the place to see an be seen in the city! Its 101 feet of stage width and 28 feet of depth made the Orpheum the only theatre between Los Angeles and Denver able to handle the traveling vaudeville shows that changed weekly. \nDesigned by architects Lescher & Mahoney\, the theatre was built for $750\,000 by Jo E. Rickards and Harry Nace. The Orpheum was designed in the atmospheric style\, with the audience sitting in a garden surrounded by Spanish-style buildings\, murals of mountains\, and forests\, under puffy white clouds moving across a deep blue domed sky. \nFor more information\, check out their website here. \n  \nDETAILS \nMembers get Priority Access to this event. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Art Deco Society will take on the Martin Auto Museum on September 28th! Martin Auto Museum has over 170 vehicles\, including classic cars\, hot rods\, customs\, imports\, and much more. It also has one of the largest collections of auto memorabilia\, antique gas pumps\, and signage anywhere! Whether you are a car expert or know nothing about them\, this event is for you. \nFor Society members\, an expert guide with Martin Auto Museum has hand-picked several deco cars to highlight the evolution of the automobile and their design in the Art Deco era – relating it to other mediums of decorative arts in the 1920s and 1930s. Art Deco elements in these automobiles can be found in architecture\, fashion\, industrial design\, and more. Learn about these marvels of engineering and art! \nUnlike other museums\, you can even step into these cars to see what it would have been like in the driver’s seat (and take some great photos)! After the tour\, you are encouraged to walk around the rest of the museum to experience cars from every era. Museum volunteers and guides can answer any question you may have on the collection. Each of these special cars has a story to tell. \nMartin Auto Museum is generously giving our Society a group discount – only $10 per ticket ($15 for non-members)! Your tickets will get you entry into the museum\, access to our curated Art Deco Society tour\, and access to the entire museum for as long as you wish. One could definitely spend the entire afternoon admiring their many exhibits. \nVintage attire is strongly encouraged! We will even have a photographer join us to take photos in and around these antique cars! \n  \nMake sure you are logged in to access our member ticket. DESCRIPTION:This program is available through the Art Deco Society of Washington. As ICADS members\, you receive a special discount for this virtual event. \n  \n \nWhen: July 11\, 2024  3:30pm-5:00pm \nWhere: Virtual (or in Washington DC!) \nCan’t make the lecture? Register\, and you will receive the recording after the event! \n  \nJoin us for an evening of entertainment as we take you back to examine the exquisite items on the art deco vanity in the 1925–38 years. \nThe newly formed country of Czechoslovakia\, which included Bohemia\, exhibited at the 1925 Paris International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. Inspired by this new style and Lalique’s glass exhibits that they saw\, Josef Schmidt and Heinrich Hoffman began designing and producing ‘Artistic Crystalware’ perfume bottles and vanity items. It combined highly detailed images with polished surfaces in lead crystal. Their initial success led other companies to follow\, often adorning these small works of art with jewelling or enameling. These exquisite pieces were exported around the world. \nSimultaneously\, in the United States\, who knew that a cure for sore throats would blossom into the highest quality perfume atomizers of the century. Thomas DeVilbiss started production of atomizers for perfume in 1905 using their patented sprayers fixed to bohemian glass bottles. Several patents later\, he hired a French designer to work with him to bring their ‘perfumizers’ to the artistic level achieved in the 1924-34 years. \n

SUMMARY:Pandora's Box at the Orpheum
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a live performance by Mysterium Quartet as part of the Orpheum’s Silents film series. This modern musical experience will be an interesting addition to the classic and (at the time) scandalous 1929 German film. This film is a great example of the early Art Deco era of film in both its design and content. \nSensationally modern\, the film Pandora’s Box follows the downward spiral of the fiery\, brash\, yet innocent showgirl Lulu (Lousie Brooks)\, whose sexual vivacity has a devastating effect on everyone she comes in contact with. Daring and stylish\, Pandora’s Box is one of silent cinema’s great masterworks and a testament to Brooks’s dazzling individuality. \n  \nWhen: April 21\, 2024 \nMeet time: 2:00pm in front of the theatre \nShow Time: 2:30pm \nWhere: Orpheum Theatre \n  \nThis is a casual meet-up for our members interested in silent film. The Art Deco Society will meet outside of the Orpheum Theatre at 2:00pm (30minutes before show time) so you can get your ticket from Erin. If you are a member\, log in to your account or register to access the member’s ticket pricing. \n \n  \n  \nAbout the Professional Building: \nThe Professional Building in Phoenix\, Arizona\, is an Art Deco skyscraper. Built in 1932\, it is 171 feet tall. Angles and setbacks are played up in this streamlined Art Deco design. The Professional Building served as a health care center and the home of National Vally Bank. It wasn’t until the 2000s that the Professional Building was given a new life as a hotel after more than two decades of abandonment. In 2013\, the building opened its doors as the Hilton Garden Inn. The outside of the building stays in it’s prime Art Deco form\, and the inside\, although renovated\, is a call to the golden era of design and elegance. \n
