SUMMARY:Orpheum Theatre Tour
DESCRIPTION:By popular demand\, we have scheduled a private tour for the Art Deco Society of the historic Orpheum Theatre. Located in Downtown Phoenix\, the Orpheum Theatre is a fully restored 1929 atmospheric theatre\, featuring a magnificent disappearing Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. This tour will provide access to both public and behind-the-scenes areas\, offering a rare glimpse into the magic of a historic movie palace. \n  \nA Brief History \nOpening on January 5\, 1929\, it was the pride of Phoenix\, a town of 48\,000. It had 1\,800 seats and an early form of air conditioning\, which made it the place to see an be seen in the city! Its 101 feet of stage width and 28 feet of depth made the Orpheum the only theatre between Los Angeles and Denver able to handle the traveling vaudeville shows that changed weekly. \nDesigned by architects Lescher & Mahoney\, the theatre was built for $750\,000 by Jo E. Rickards and Harry Nace. The Orpheum was designed in the atmospheric style\, with the audience sitting in a garden surrounded by Spanish-style buildings\, murals of mountains\, and forests\, under puffy white clouds moving across a deep blue domed sky. \nFor more information\, check out their website here. \n  \nDETAILS \nMembers get Priority Access to this event. It’s impossible not to notice the original brass elevators and marble floors that invite you to the large open-air lobby. The Art Deco Society of New York is spending this year focusing on the Art Deco Style’s exuberance\, hope\, and modernity\, as it defined the interwar years in much of the West\, as societies navigated boom and bust\, revolution and retrenchment\, optimism and despair. \nJoin the celebration when the Art Deco Society of New York partners with our friends at Greenwich Village Preservation for this special free event with its Executive Director\, Andrew Berman. He will take a look back at the roots of this design aesthetic\, which grew out of revolutionary 19th and early 20th century movements\, and examine how it transformed New York City\, from skyline landmarks to humble neighborhood infill developments. Then he’ll zoom in on Greenwich Village\, the East Village\, and NoHo\, and take a closer look at the many stunning and surprising examples of the style in our neighborhoods\, ranging from prominent and beloved monuments to overlooked workaday structures\, with a few prisons\, parking garages\, and post offices in between — both surviving and long gone. He’ll look at where and why Art Deco proliferated in our neighborhoods\, as well as where and why it surprisingly sometimes didn’t. \nAbout the Speaker:  \nAndrew Berman has been Executive Director of Village Preservation since 2002. Andrew is an architectural historian and lifelong New Yorker who worked on development and preservation issues in Greenwich Village\, Lower Manhattan\, and the West Side for more than three decades. The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles is not offering an ICADS discount for this virtual event.  \nLa Grace et L’Elegance du Gout Francais: The Jewelry of the 1925 Paris Exposition \nAbout the Program: \nOur celebration of the centennial of the Art Deco style continues with a reprise of the lecture that Lisa Schoening gave in person\, in June. The broadcast will be live\, not a recording of her earlier talk. \nThe organizers of the 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes invited renowned Paris jewelers Cartier\, Boucheron\, and Georges Fouquet among others to bring their most modern creations to the Exposition. Representing nearly a decade’s worth of painstaking work\, these jewels showcased the determination of French jewelry designers to join their compatriots in all areas of consumer manufacturing in bringing a new language of design to life. \nFor six months visitors to the 1925 Paris Exposition had the opportunity to see exhibits from the most celebrated jewelers in their Pavilions in the center of Paris. \nAbout the Speaker:  \nLisa Schoening has been enamoured with jewels since childhood\, and had the great good fortune to have spent much of her career teaching both the science of gems and the history of jewelry for the Gemological Institute of America and the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. This presentation will dive into the history of dance from the 1910s-1940s when jazz music evolved with a wide variety of dancing styles that include vernacular jazz\, swing\, ballroom\, Latin\, blues\, and more. He is founder of the performance group Savage Rhythm. As an instructor and DJ\, Jonathan has traveled throughout North America and Europe spreading the gospel of classic jazz dance\, music and history. He has performed in New York City\, Pittsburgh\, Las Vegas\, Los Angeles\, and throughout the southwest. Jonathan’s passion for dance lies in roots vernacular jazz and swing styles. \nThrough his experience as a student of the sciences of anatomy and kinesiology\, Jonathan brings the unique perspective and knowledge of body mechanics and movement to teaching and the dance. Jonathan’s obsession with jazz and swing started at the very young age of 8 years old through surprise exposure to Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. The awe and wonder at the music and movement of jazz greats continued until meeting friend\, mentor\, and original swing dancer Frankie Manning and childhood dreams of jazz dancing became a reality. He has since gone on to study\, work\, and collaborate with many classic and contemporary masters.

All guests must purchase their own tickets and can arrive at any time during the event to check out the car show.  \n \n  \nWhat is the Concours?\nA curated and judged exhibition of the world’s finest collector cars\, the Arizona Concours d’Elegance is a celebration of automotive design\, supporting the arts and local artists. \nThe event is presented in partnership with Scottsdale Arts\, the nationally recognized arts organization responsible for public art projects for the city of Scottsdale. \nThe Concours invites more than 100 select rare and exotic automobiles to be considered for judging and exhibition\, with the best among them earning class awards and the coveted Best-of-Show. \nMore than 150 volunteers support this event as well as judges from the United States\, Canada\, and Europe. To see more or to register to receive the discount\, all they need to do is click on the title of the event above and select the ICADS option.  \nAbout the Program: \nThe National Museum of Toys and Miniatures in Kansas City\, Missouri\, houses the largest fine-scale miniature collection and one of the nation’s largest historic toy collections on public display. Among these are found many intriguing examples of Art Deco design. So\, join us as we celebrate the holiday season with a special look back at toys of the Deco era with our guide from the National Museum. \nToys\, like other material culture\, are reflections of the larger society in which they were created. While crafted for children\, toys were most often purchased for them by adults\, and it is not surprising that adults would seek toys that reflected the popular style of the period. While a parent may not be able to afford a home in the Art Deco style\, providing a dollhouse version of this to a child may have helped to fill that void for the adult. \nArtists who work in the fine-scale miniature movement look to the past for inspiration. When the Museum’s co-founder Barbara Marshall commissioned an artwork from British artists Kevin Mulvaney and Susie Rogers\, they chose multiple architectural models from the 1930s to create a magnificent Art Deco Jewelry Store (2011). Chris Toledo’s Art Deco Bathroom (2022) is one of many designed by the Los Angeles native to preserve the distinctive architecture of the period at a time when many of the actual bathrooms are disappearing due to remodeling or demolition. \nJoin Amy McKune\, Curator / Senior Manager of Collections\, for an in-depth look at some of these Art Deco-inspired treasures from the collection. \nCan’t join us at the time of the live Zoom event ? In this role\, she balances the responsibilities of managing the intellectual and physical control of the collection and interpreting it through curating exhibitions. McKune came to the Museum with thirty years of experience at four museums. Highlights of her tenure at the Museum include receiving and implementing two IMLS grants\, coordinating the development of a new off-site collections storage unit\, and curating several highly regarded exhibitions.
