Among these are found many intriguing examples of Art Deco design. So\, join us as we celebrate the holiday season with a special look back at toys of the Deco era with our guide from the National Museum. \nToys\, like other material culture\, are reflections of the larger society in which they were created. While crafted for children\, toys were most often purchased for them by adults\, and it is not surprising that adults would seek toys that reflected the popular style of the period. While a parent may not be able to afford a home in the Art Deco style\, providing a dollhouse version of this to a child may have helped to fill that void for the adult. \nArtists who work in the fine-scale miniature movement look to the past for inspiration. When the Museum’s co-founder Barbara Marshall commissioned an artwork from British artists Kevin Mulvaney and Susie Rogers\, they chose multiple architectural models from the 1930s to create a magnificent Art Deco Jewelry Store (2011). Chris Toledo’s Art Deco Bathroom (2022) is one of many designed by the Los Angeles native to preserve the distinctive architecture of the period at a time when many of the actual bathrooms are disappearing due to remodeling or demolition. \nJoin Amy McKune\, Curator / Senior Manager of Collections\, for an in-depth look at some of these Art Deco-inspired treasures from the collection. \nCan’t join us at the time of the live Zoom event ? Martin Auto Museum has over 170 vehicles\, including classic cars\, hot rods\, customs\, imports\, and much more. It also has one of the largest collections of auto memorabilia\, antique gas pumps\, and signage anywhere! Whether you are a car expert or know nothing about them\, this event is for you. \nFor Society members\, an expert guide with Martin Auto Museum has hand-picked several deco cars to highlight the evolution of the automobile and their design in the Art Deco era – relating it to other mediums of decorative arts in the 1920s and 1930s. Art Deco elements in these automobiles can be found in architecture\, fashion\, industrial design\, and more. Learn about these marvels of engineering and art! \nUnlike other museums\, you can even step into these cars to see what it would have been like in the driver’s seat (and take some great photos)! After the tour\, you are encouraged to walk around the rest of the museum to experience cars from every era. Museum volunteers and guides can answer any question you may have on the collection. Inspired by this new style and Lalique’s glass exhibits that they saw\, Josef Schmidt and Heinrich Hoffman began designing and producing ‘Artistic Crystalware’ perfume bottles and vanity items. It combined highly detailed images with polished surfaces in lead crystal. Their initial success led other companies to follow\, often adorning these small works of art with jewelling or enameling. These exquisite pieces were exported around the world. \nSimultaneously\, in the United States\, who knew that a cure for sore throats would blossom into the highest quality perfume atomizers of the century. Thomas DeVilbiss started production of atomizers for perfume in 1905 using their patented sprayers fixed to bohemian glass bottles.
