SUMMARY:Cocktails of the Deco Era: A Taste of Prohibition
DESCRIPTION:Indulge in Art Deco’s liquid legacy with this cocktail-tasting experience.\nEnter a different time when skirts were shorter\, jazz was hotter\, the cocktails were stronger…and there were ostriches.  That’s right. Ostriches. \nTake a journey through 1920s Arizona\, one sip at a time\, during this luxurious cocktail-tasting experience hosted by The Ostrich Bar in Chandler\, Arizona\, which sits right underneath the historic San Marco’s Hotel. Chandler has a unique history\, and it all started with founder Dr. AJ Chandler bringing his veterinary practice and ostrich ranch to Chandler’s desert landscape. As the city grew\, Dr. AJ Chandler chose to store his Ostrich feathers in the large basement of the newly built San Marcos Hotel. And if we know anything about basements during the Jazz Age\, we know that they are the perfect location for a speakeasy. Looking closely\, you may even see bricked-up doorways that once led to an underground tunnel system in the city. It’s hard not to believe that this was a place for the occasional drink or illicit activities during Prohibition. \nSo wear your finest dress or suit\, bring your friends\, enjoy excellent historic cocktails\, and learn about prohibition in Chandler during the Art Deco Era. Your ticket includes a two-hour cocktail-tasting experience where you will be led on a journey through these classic prohibition-era cocktails and some with a modern twist. You’ll learn about their origin and why they have stood the test of time! \nAnd if that’s not enough\, know that the party doesn’t stop after the tasting! Stay a while for more drinks\, a bite to eat\, and live jazz with the Society! If you can’t make the tasting\, join us for the live music\, which is open to the public. The Ostrich will serve its full drink and food menu! \nDon’t forget to say the secret password: “I’m with the Phoenix Art Deco Society”\, and The Ostrich will donate 15% of food sales to our organization!  \n  \nTASTING HIGHLIGHTS:\n\nImmersive 2-hour prohibition-era cocktail tasting\nHear the stories behind the cocktails\nLearn about the historic underground of the San Marcos hotel\nStay after for free live jazz music!\n15% of food sales going back to the Phx Art Deco Society\n\n  \nDATE: Sunday\, June 23rd. \nTASTING: 3:00pm-5:00pm \nLIVE MUSIC (open to the public): 5:00pm-7:30pm \nLOCATION: The Ostrich (10 N San Marcos Pl #B1\, Chandler\, AZ 85225) \n  \nMembers have early access to tickets!  \n$40 for members \n$50 for non-members \nClick below to purchase your ticket! SUMMARY:Pandora's Box at the Orpheum
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a live performance by Mysterium Quartet as part of the Orpheum’s Silents film series. This modern musical experience will be an interesting addition to the classic and (at the time) scandalous 1929 German film. This film is a great example of the early Art Deco era of film in both its design and content. \nSensationally modern\, the film Pandora’s Box follows the downward spiral of the fiery\, brash\, yet innocent showgirl Lulu (Lousie Brooks)\, whose sexual vivacity has a devastating effect on everyone she comes in contact with. Daring and stylish\, Pandora’s Box is one of silent cinema’s great masterworks and a testament to Brooks’s dazzling individuality. \n  \nWhen: April 21\, 2024 \nMeet time: 2:00pm in front of the theatre \nShow Time: 2:30pm \nWhere: Orpheum Theatre \n  \nThis is a casual meet-up for our members interested in silent film. The Art Deco Society will meet outside of the Orpheum Theatre at 2:00pm (30minutes before show time) so you can get your ticket from Erin. Please give yourself extra time to park and get through security to enter the Orpheum. We encourage our members to dress up in the spirit of 1920s movie-goers and pay respect to such a grand theatre! We’ll see you there! \n  \nTickets are usually $23 + $5.70 in fees through the Orpheum \nOur members are getting a discounted rate of $18. We are passing on this discount to our members. We only have 10 tickets available\, so it’s first come\, first served. If you are interested in more silent film nights\, let us know\, and we will try to organize larger groups in the future! \nSee more about this event from the Orpheum here. \n

Built in 1932\, it is 171 feet tall. Angles and setbacks are played up in this streamlined Art Deco design. The Professional Building served as a health care center and the home of National Vally Bank. It wasn’t until the 2000s that the Professional Building was given a new life as a hotel after more than two decades of abandonment. In 2013\, the building opened its doors as the Hilton Garden Inn. The outside of the building stays in it’s prime Art Deco form\, and the inside\, although renovated\, is a call to the golden era of design and elegance. \n
