“In August of 1935 the WPA expanded to include work relief for Americans engaged in the arts with the formation of Federal Project Number One. The most creative and innovative of the Federal One components, but also the most controversial, was the Federal Theatre Project (FTP), which provided work for actors, directors, playwrights, designers, stage technicians, and other workers in the theatre field. This lecture will examine the wide range of productions presented by the FTP and the charges that led to its early dissolution.”
