Highrises: The Luhrs Legacy & Southwest Art Deco Influence Pop-Up Exhibit Coming To Downtown Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ – Step inside the iconic Luhrs Tower during the month of May to experience Art Deco architecture, design, and Phoenix history like never before. The Phoenix Art Deco Society is proud to host Southwestern Art Deco & The Luhrs Legacy, a unique art and history exhibit that highlights the selected work of Chris Hytha, architect and photographer, who recently completed his newest project, Highrises. Highrises, focuses on the character and craftsmanship on display at the top of these landmark Art Deco buildings in a way that can’t be seen from street level. The Highrises Collection reveals fascinating details and stories of these distinctly American icons.

Guests are invited to wander through the exhibit where they will admire selections of Hytha’s work that showcase Hispanic, Spanish, and indigenous southwestern influence in Art Deco skyscrapers from across the United States, including the Phoenix Luhrs Tower.

This pop-up exhibit will not only celebrate the Luhrs Tower, but the legacy of the Luhrs family which mirrored the exponential growth of Phoenix during the 1920s.The creation of the Luhrs Tower and Luhrs Building marked Phoenix’s transition from a small western town, to the modern city that it is today.

Accompanying these exhibits are artifacts, images, and more that showcase Art Deco design in its various forms.

The community is also invited to a special presentation on May 17th with author and antique skyscraper historian Mark Houser, who will be talking about the Luhrs family legacy in Phoenix and the impact of the several Luhrs buildings in Phoenix.

More than an aesthetic, Art Deco influences the culture, momentum, and liberation of the 1920s and 1930s. Through events like this one, the Phoenix Art Deco Society invites the community to experience the Art Deco era like never before.

The pop-up exhibit is open to the public the entire month of May, Thursdays & Fridays from 1 pm-7 pm and Saturdays & Sundays 11 am-7 pm inside the Luhrs Tower.
